M-Mode examination of the left ventricle

Normal values
Left panel
: normal LV
Right panel: dilated LV with reduced systolic function. Fractional shortening is 21 %. Note hypokinesis of the interventricular septum.

Note increased mitral E-septum separation on the right, as compared to the normal LV.

IVS
: interventricular septum
LV: left ventricular cavity
Phono: phonocardiographic tracing
PLW: postero-lateral wall
RV: right ventricular cavity

Measurement units: cm
Normal values:
PWT= 43 - 61 %
IVS= 34 - 50 %

Measurement of end-diastolic (red arrows synchronous with Q wave of ECG) and end-systolic (at maximum systolic wall thickness) left ventricular wall thickness.
