Left ventricular volumes - Pitfalls

<< Back Left ventricular monoplane volume (Dodge formula)
[(area planimetry x 8) / (3 x p  x long axis)]    (ml)     Normal values.
1   2
Correct positioning
of ultrasound transducer on left ventricular apex.
Long axis= 8.21 cm
End-diastolic volume= 106 ml.

Wrong positioning
of ultrasound transducer on left ventricular distal anterior wall (instead of ventricular apex), resulting in foreshortening of apex, underestimation of left ventricular long axis and overestimation of left ventricular volume (end-diastolic).
Long axis= 7.83 cm
End-diastolic volume= 123 ml.
