Mitral Planes

Interactive analysis of the mitral valve (and cardiac base) scan planes

Click on the different colored scan lines to see corresponding normal views of the mitral valve apparatus.
Remember that in standard echocardiographic imaging the heart is imaged as viewed from the apex
(structures near the left lung on the right of the image; structures below the sternum on the left of the image)

Standard scan progression during TE exam: blue -> red -> green scan planes.
The curved arrow shows the medial to lateral progression of the left border of the scanned image.

Blue lines: low esophagus, horizontal scan planes, 5-chambers (0°) and 4-chambers (20°) views
Red lines: low esophagus, longitudinal scan planes, left ventricular 2-chamber views (60°-90°)
Green lines: low esophagus, longitudinal scan planes, left ventricular long axis views (90°- 150°)
